Join us for our September webinar featuring the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC)’s Joshua Maitoza, who will share his experiences as a coach in the MATHCOUNTS outreach program offered at the NUWC Division, Newport (Rhode Island) to introduce underrepresented communities, particularly English as a second language (ESL) students, to Department of War STEM opportunities. Leaning on his prior teaching experience, Mr. Maitoza negotiated with MATHCOUNTS to ensure the program was accessible for ESL students. His mentorship helped participants achieve measurable improvement in mathematics performance, with one student earning the “Mathlete of the Year” award after their first year of MATHCOUNTS participation. Notably, Mr. Maitoza’s advocacy has that language accommodation is permanently available to any school participating in the MATHCOUNTS program nationally, creating lasting systemic change that extends far beyond his local involvement.
